United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby announced that operations at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) have finally returned to normal after months of disruptions. The airline, which uses Newark as a major hub, had faced widespread delays, cancellations, and logistical challenges, prompting Kirby to publicly seek intervention from federal and local authorities.
In a recent statement, Kirby credited improved coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for the turnaround. 'We had to beg for help, but the collaboration has paid off,' he said. The airline has also implemented internal measures, including optimized crew scheduling and additional ground staff, to prevent a recurrence of the chaos.
Industry analysts note that Newark’s congestion issues stem from a combination of air traffic control limitations, runway constraints, and United’s high flight volume. A report from The Points Guy highlighted that United operates nearly 70% of flights at Newark, making the hub particularly vulnerable to disruptions. The FAA has since increased staffing and adjusted air traffic procedures to alleviate bottlenecks.
Passenger advocates remain cautiously optimistic, urging United to maintain transparency and invest in long-term infrastructure upgrades. The airline has pledged to expand terminal facilities and modernize baggage systems by 2026.
