Brooklyn-based energy startup Amogy has raised $80 million in a recent funding round to scale its ammonia-to-power technology, targeting emissions-heavy industries like shipping and data centers. The investment, led by Temasek and joined by Saudi Aramco Ventures and other strategic backers, underscores growing interest in ammonia as a clean energy carrier. Amogy’s proprietary system converts ammonia into hydrogen on-demand, which then fuels zero-emission electric power systems. The company has already demonstrated its technology in a semi-truck and a drone, with plans to deploy a marine vessel prototype by late 2025. Ammonia’s high energy density and ease of transport make it a promising alternative to fossil fuels, particularly for industries where battery electrification remains impractical. The shipping sector, responsible for nearly 3% of global CO₂ emissions, is under mounting pressure to decarbonize. Ammonia, which emits no carbon when produced using renewable energy, is increasingly seen as a viable pathway. Competitors like C-Zero and Starfire Energy are also exploring ammonia-based solutions, though Amogy’s modular approach aims to accelerate adoption by retrofitting existing infrastructure. Data centers, another focus for Amogy, face similar sustainability challenges. With energy demands soaring due to AI and cloud computing, ammonia-powered backup generators could offer a greener alternative to diesel. The $80M infusion will help Amogy expand its engineering team and advance commercial partnerships, positioning ammonia as a key player in the transition to low-carbon energy.
