The 'Gen Z stare'—a term coined to describe the intense, often unblinking gaze attributed to younger generations—has sparked debates online, with millennials and older generations questioning its intent. Business Insider recently asked seven Gen Zers for their take, revealing a mix of amusement, confusion, and defiance.
For many Gen Z respondents, the stare is less about intimidation and more about authenticity. 'It’s just how we communicate,' said one 22-year-old participant. 'We’re not trying to be rude; we’re just present.' Others dismissed the trend as another overanalyzed generational quirk, akin to millennial avocado toast or Boomer nostalgia.
Additional research suggests the phenomenon may stem from Gen Z’s digital upbringing. A study by Pew Research Center highlights how younger generations, raised on video calls and social media, have developed different nonverbal cues compared to their predecessors. The 'stare' could simply be a reflection of their comfort with sustained eye contact in virtual settings translating awkwardly to in-person interactions.
Critics argue the debate is another example of intergenerational tension, where older groups misinterpret younger behaviors. Meanwhile, Gen Zers seem unfazed, with many embracing the stare as part of their identity. 'If people want to call it a trend, fine,' said another respondent. 'But we’re not changing how we look at the world.'
